Sketch Day with Tracey Fox!

Hello! It’s Tracey Fox with you today, and I have had the best time this year creating layouts based on the great sketches Elle’s Studio has been sharing here on the blog every month! Today, I’m excited to bring you my take on the first of the August sketches!

This layout sketch is so classic and perfect to create with any Elle’s Studio kit, because you can use a combination of 4×6 and 3×4 photos and tags in a simple grid design for a well-balanced page. For my layout, I chose some recent photos to tell the story of my 11-year-old nephew Simon’s newfound interest in cooking.

The bright red “currently obsessed with” tag from the August 2020 Kit sparked the idea for this layout, so I used it on the page and filled in the empty space with the word “cooking” using the Yellow Puffy Alphabet Stickers.

In order to fit more photos onto this layout, I was excited to use the 4″ x 6″ tag with space for two small polaroid-style photos. I had two photos that I had downloaded from my sister-in-law’s Facebook page, and it really helped to print them this small (just over 2” square) since they were low quality. I enjoyed dressing up all of the tags and photos with some of the chipboard stickers from the new Chipboard Tags set, because the sentiments on them fit my story so well. For an added detail, I stamped the pretty paint swoosh stamp from the Title Builder Vol. 4 Stamp underneath two of the stickers to add some more yellow to the layout.

Inspired by the half circle embellishment at the top of the sketch, I used my Silhouette machine to cut the sun shape from the August Cut Files right into the background of my page. I backed this area with yellow patterned paper covered in yellow buttons from my embellishment stash, and I just love the fun impact this makes on my otherwise simple page.

Another characteristic I love in the sketch is the small vertical title hugging the side of one of the 3″ x 4′ elements. The word “awesome” from the So Cool Puffy Stickers fit perfectly here and also fit perfectly with the theme of my layout. I used my typewriter to type my journaling on another tag from the August 2020 Kit, and knowing I wanted to add the yellow acrylic heart to this tag, I left that area blank when I typed.

The simple border along the top and bottom of the sketch really helped tie the design together. I chose to achieve this look by using a few strips cut from the Bright Polka Dot 6.5 x 8 Inch Paper Stack in colors matching the layout. I finished the layout off with the “currently loving” stamped sentiment from the List Stamp, some dot puffy stickers from the So Cool Puffy Stickers, and some lines of machine stitching.

I’m so happy with the end result of this layout, and using the sketch made the process so easy and quick! I also love how this straightforward, go-to page design really lets the beautiful, bright colors in the August 2020 kit and add-ons really shine!
