Sparking a Story with Candace Perkins

Sometimes a product can spark a story that we didn’t know we had in us, and our page design can start from there. Today, Candace Perkins is sharing a gorgeous two page spread featuring a love letter to her children, all influenced by one of our new shop items this month. Let’s take a look and hear what inspired her.

Hello Elle’s Studio friends! Happy March! It’s Candace here with you today to share a project using the March 2017 Kit and a few extras from the shop.

In continuing my focus on storytelling this year, I first started my layout by spreading out all the beautiful products from this month’s release. Next, I looked across all the products to see what stories the products sparked. When I saw the Grow and Bloom Wood Veneer, I knew that I could use the veneers as bullet points in a letter to my boys.

For the base of my layout, I started with two 8-1/2″ x 11″ pieces of white card stock. I chose to keep the bulk of my creative paper work to the left side of the spread and my story with the accompanying photo on the right.

I cut various tags from the March Kit and papers from the Sunny Days 12″ x 12″ Paper Collection in the shape of a pie chart. The pie chart is the main design focus of my spread. I used the Grow and Bloom Wood Veneer words to act as a tie to the left and right side of the spread through the numbers and journaling.

On the right side of my spread I printed a large photo of my boys right now. Under the photo I added my extended journaling.

For my extended journaling I numbered each of my bullet points with the coordinating wood veneers. I wrote a kind of advice letter to my boys, a letter telling them things I want them to remember as they go through life. You can read my journaling here.

I added a few small embellishments to the right side to tie it in with the left. I wanted to make sure that I had balance across the entire spread, in both weight and color.

I love the final spread! I love the story focus and the way the goodies from Elle’s Studio helped me to dive a little deeper and tell a more complete story. Give this a try the next time you sit down to be creative. Start with story, find the sparks and dig a little deeper.

Have a beautiful day!
